Nearly everyone of us or most of us can recall an interaction where we've experienced the, "Did that really just happen?" moment. Every year job boards, social media platforms, and others release a top ten list of "What the worst..." No area is immune and one can be extremely costly for an employer and that area is the interview process. Employers lose hundreds of thousands of dollars each year due to illegal questions raised during the interview process. The questions come from left field and have nothing to do with the scope of the job yet here is the hiring manager exposing your company to lawsuits by asking an illegal question. One company, Seymour Midwest, a manufacturing organization found out the hard way how costly this lack of training can be. The company was ordered to pay $100,000 to settle an age discrimination lawsuit filed with the EEOC. The company was also ordered to provide employment training to its hiring personnel. Taking this into consideration the cost for this lawsuit can easily be assumed to have been a very costly expense. The proper training could have prevented this event. It is important that hiring managers are educated acceptable interview procedures and a quick list tip sheet of do's and don'ts on a regular basis.
